Preparing for Your New Baby

Preparing for Your New Baby

Having a baby is a life changing event and you are going to have to make some changes to your home and lifestyle to help make life easier when your new baby comes home from the hospital. Here are some ideas to make that transition easier on everyone involved.

Prepare a safe place for your baby to sleep. Many mothers initially sleep in the same room with their newborn babies so preparing a baby room in time for your newborns arrival is not always necessary, babies usually prefer sleeping with their mother. Many mothers prepare a safe place for their baby to sleep next to their bed such as a crib, cradle, or a co-sleeper, and some mothers simply take the baby to bed with them. There are certain precautions one has to take wherever their newborn baby sleeps. Your baby will be safest sleeping on a firm, flat mattress, and steer clear of using blankets, quilts, sheets, pillows and other forms of soft bedding around your newborn. You should also make your newborn sleep on his/her back.

You should also have some clothes ready for your newborn’s arrival, t-shirts, gowns, onesies, and etcetera. Your newborn will out grow their clothes very fast and some babies are too big to wear newborn sized clothing so be prepared with more then one size of clothing at your house.

Also make sure you have enough diapers on hand for your newborn baby to use. Newborn babies sometimes use as much as ten diapers a day so it would be wise to always have a week’s supply of diapers on hand. Don’t go overboard when buying newborn sized diapers though, your baby will grow fast and will quickly outgrow their diapers. If you are going to be using cloth diapers some mothers find the newborn size unnecessary.

Since you will be fairly busy once your newborn baby arrives home you should get your house cleaned and organized ahead of time. Get rid of as much disorder as you can. Go to the store and stock up on lots of soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper, and dry foods as you can, when you are busy with your newborn baby you won’t always have time to run to the store for something you might need. You might also want to consider preparing as many meals as you can and freezing them before your baby is born. One easy way to do this is to cook double as much dinner before the baby is born and freeze the extra.
