Advice for
First Time
Parents
Having a baby is
a great time and
is a lot of fun
for the parents.
It can also be a
very stressful
time for new
parents if they
don’t know what
to do when they
take the baby
home from the
hospital. Here
are a few bits
of advice to
help new parents
after they get
their newborn
home from the
hospital.
New parents
might want to
consider getting
some help after
they take their
newborn baby
home. Think
about enlisting
help from family
and friends to
get through the
first few weeks
at home with
your newborn
until you are
comfortable with
your parenting
skills. Some
people even hire
a baby nurse to
help them after
the get home.
If you are a new
parent and
haven’t had the
pleasure of
being around
newborns then
their fragility
can be very
frightening.
Here are a few
basic tips to
remember when
handling your
newborn baby:
Always be
careful to
support your
newborn baby’s
head and neck.
Newborn baby’s
necks are not
strong and can’t
support the
weight of their
head’s, always
cradle the
baby’s head when
you are carrying
the newborn and
always support
the head and
neck when
holding the baby
upright or
laying the
newborn down.
If you are using
a carrier,
stroller, or a
car seat then
keep in mind the
baby should
always be
securely
fastened in to
the device. You
should also
limit a
newborn’s
activity that
may be too bumpy
or rough.
A newborn baby
is much too
fragile to play
roughly and
should never be
bounced on
someone’s knee
or thrown in the
air.
When coming home
from the
hospital you
should have a
baby change
station already
set up. A baby
change station
is a place where
you can easily
change your
baby’s diapers
and/or clothes
and have all of
the supplies
you’ll need
within reach.
You can purchase
a changing table
from most stores
that sell baby
furniture, or
you can use a
bed or a well
padded, clean
floor. For
changing diapers
you will want to
be well stocked
up on clean
diapers,
fasteners (if
you are using
cloth diapers),
diaper ointment
(for rashes),
warm water, a
clean washcloth,
and baby wipes
(cotton balls
are a good
alternative to
baby wipes). |
